Nature Trails:

 Arvalem Caves: The celebrated caves of Arvalem, dating back to an ancient era not far from the temple of Rudreshwar are of great archaeological interest. An inscription on a Shivalinga  in cave #2  is in Sanskrit and  Brahmi characters of the 7th century A.D.

 

Arvalem Waterfalls: In the vicinity of the temple of Rudreshwar, is  a majestic waterfall  with a head of about 70ft, forms a sizeable  lake at the bottom which is a temptation to seasoned swimmers. The falls are  best seen just after the copious monsoon in all its splendor.

 
Dudhsagar Waterfalls:  (10 kms from Colem Railway Station) is  one of the most spectacular sights  in Goa, A “Must”  destination for hikers and trekkers.

Kesarval Spring emerges from hard and compact rocks and is  reputed to have medicinal properties.

 
Mayem Lake in the lap of  rolling green hills is an ideal picnic & boating spot. Good accommodation facilities are available in Cottages.

Ancestral Goa: (Big Foot) A centre for Art, Culture & Environment at Loutolim, (9 kms from Margao),  is an aesthetically designed open - air venue illustrating Goa’s traditional past. Set in eco-friendly  environs, this mock-up village traces 100 years of Goa’s lifestyles and heritage. Local artifacts and handicrafts are available at the centre .

 

Another major attraction here is ‘Natural Harmony’ – the longest laterite monolithic sculpture in India measuring 14 x 5 metres which makes this a “must see” place for every visitor. Sculpted in Greco-roman style this horizontally etched Sant Mirabai playing the ektara found its way into the Limca Book of Records.

 

FORTS

 

Aguada Fort: The name derives from several fresh water springs (“Aguada” means “water” in Portuguese) that existed on its site. The fort  presently houses the central jail. A 19th century built lighthouse is situated inside the fortress. Aguada Fort crowns the rocky plateau of the headland  andis the best – preserved Portuguese bastion in Goa

 

Chapora Fort : Made of red laterite and was built by the Portuguese in 1617, on the site of an earlier Muslim structure . The massive ramparts and scattered Muslim tombstones are all that is left of this fort.

Corjuem Fort is situated alongside the Mapusa river near the village of Aldona  and was built in 1705 by the Portuguese .

Terekhol Fort on the Northern bank of the Terekhol river was built by the Raja of Sawantwadi and was captured by the Portuguese Viceroy in 1746.

Reis Magos Fort: Situated on the right bank of the Mondovi about two miles to the northeast of Fort Aguada  was constructed in 1551 by the Portuguese. 

 

Ruins of the Fortress of Colvale .

Standing on the northern frontier of Bardez on the left bank of the Bardez River, this fortress was erected in 1681 and is now in ruins.forts

 
Mormugao Fort: Was built to protect the harbour to the Vasco –da- Gama town. Its work started in 1624. Unfortunately , except the chapel and a portion of the boundary wall, little is left of this fort.
